Back in September a heavy dose of practicality swept the SS19 catwalks. Utility wear demonstrates that function and aesthetics can be easily combined. You’ll find it in many different designs as khaki cargo pants, beige shirt dresses, boiler suits and… khaki shorts!
For my trip to Havana, I knew that my outfits had to be practical. Though I also wanted them to look sophisticated. We had planned some long city walks, so one of my first challenges was to find comfortable sandals that also looked elegant. As a heel lover, I felt it was almost impossible to not feel like I was settling for less. Though somehow, against all expectations, I managed to find a pair I liked, that was comfortable yet elegant in its design. They were my starting point for most my outfits in Havana.
Going forward with all the practicality, I knew I needed a pair of shorts. I actually randomly ran into these and immediately fell for them. I just love how easy they are to combine. The khaki colour, the high waist and the adjustable belt make it a very versatile piece. My advice for styling utility wear? Try to combine it with more elegant pieces. In this case, a black, sheer one shoulder top. This just gives the outfit that little bit of extra it needs and makes it a little more chic rather than just comfortable. To finish the look, I went with a neutral coloured statement bag, this really tied it all in. Some general advice, invest in a statement bag. This can really take your outfit from zero to ten.
But let’s leave all the rambling behind and get to the actual styling tips. Over all utility wear can be really versatile. With its neutral colours and comfortable design it’s really easy to wear and combine. If you like a more sophisticated look, I really recommend combining it with some elegant, high quality pieces. Accessories are key here. Combine it with a really nice belt, wear your most elegant shoes and put a statement bag with it to top it all off. Really want to embrace the off-duty look? You can easily pair utility wear with a simple t-shirt and combine it with your favourite pair of sneakers.
Below I’ve linked some of my favourite utility wear pieces. I hope this will give you a little inspiration!
